The popularity of paper bags is not the result of environmental protection
Friends, the "plastic restriction order" has been implemented in China for 12 years. Are you surprised?
After 12 years of hard work, plastic bags are no longer flying blatantly on the streets.
The author believes that everyone has a common understanding: plastic bags pollute the environment, and most people think that using paper bags is to protect the environment.
For breakfast, people subconsciously feel that paper bags are more environmentally friendly than plastic bags.
So are paper bags really as environmentally friendly as people think?

Beautified paper bag

Paper bags are considered environmentally friendly because of their reputation for being highly recyclable and easy to decompose. But if we look at the life cycle of paper bags, you will find that it is not that beautiful.
Life cycle: the entire process from the acquisition of raw materials, product production, storage, transportation and disposal after use, to waste recycling.
The paper bags we commonly use to carry things are mostly kraft paper bags, which have a certain load-bearing capacity, and recycled paper fibers are shorter, so kraft paper bags are mostly made of raw pulp and mostly wood fibers.

In 2019 alone, my country's wood pulp consumption was 35.81 million tons

Data comes from China Paper Association
This number means that a large number of trees have been cut down, causing problems such as soil erosion, landslides, climate abnormalities, and ecological imbalance.

The wood is sent to paper mills to be made into "wood pulp," which produces "black liquor."

The wastewater produced by the alkali pulping process in the papermaking industry contains a large amount of lignin and is dark brown in color, called "black liquor". Black liquor contains a large amount of suspended solids, organic pollutants and toxic substances, and direct discharge into water bodies will cause serious pollution.

The 2019 incident of “more than 40,000 tons of black liquid dug out at the edge of the Tengger Desert” was caused by pollutants discharged from paper mills more than ten years ago.
Not only black liquor, but also wastewater produced by paper mills is a big problem.

In 2017, the national pulp output was 16.2092 million tons. From January to November 2018, the national paper product output was 107.15 million tons. That is to say, my country's paper production capacity is about 7 times that of pulp production capacity. Papermaking consumes 15 tons of water per ton of paper, and pulping consumes 30 tons of water per ton of pulp. Papermaking wastewater is still 3.5 times the total pulping wastewater.

There is a formula for wastewater discharge standards:

Paper mill wastewater must comply with the strictest concentration limits stipulated in the discharge standards. From this point of view, it seems that everything is more reasonable and environmental protection is achieved to the maximum extent.

Official website of the National Paper Association "Water Pollutant Emission Standards for the Pulp and Paper Industry"

However, we can also see from the table that these "standard discharge" wastewater does contain harmful substances. And this wastewater that has been recycled through industry will go up to the sky and into the ground in a legal way and enter the water cycle.
If the factory abides by laws and regulations, perhaps the water that meets the standard will be relatively "clear." If not, maybe in some inconspicuous corner, these "poisonous water" will quietly pollute everything.
Xinmi, Henan Province illegally discharges sewage, leaving villagers with no choice but to use sewage for irrigation
In addition to water pollution, air pollution and solid pollution also exist only during the pulping process.

Paper mills emit odors every day. These odors are mainly ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, which are very harmful to the human body.
Hydrogen sulfide has irritating and cell-asphyxiating effects. When the concentration of inhaled hydrogen sulfide is low, obvious irritation can be felt; when the concentration of inhaled hydrogen sulfide is high, the olfactory nerve endings are paralyzed, leading to coma or even death.
In addition to odor, solid pollutants such as green mud and white mud will also be produced, and most of them will be landfilled. Not only will it occupy and pollute land resources, but it will also pollute groundwater.

Green mud residue is mainly sodium carbonate and sodium sulfide: 2NaOH+CO2=Na2CO3+H2O. Because it contains a small amount of iron ions, it is green. White mud residue is mainly causticization product calcium carbonate: Na2CO3+Ca(OH)2= 2NaOH+ CaCO3

When the author talks about this, he has only finished the step of "pulping", but it has already touched upon air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, as well as soil erosion caused by cutting down trees and exacerbating the greenhouse effect.

Subsequent papermaking will also cause noise pollution, power consumption, and transportation will cause exhaust pollution...
The paper bag has finally arrived in our hands. Looking at it now, do you still think it is environmentally friendly?

Paper bags are no longer simple

What is very intriguing is that the paper industry is considered one of the largest sources of pollution to the environment. As we all know, paper bags are considered environmentally friendly, but no one questions it. What happened in the middle? Is it just because of its high recycling rate and easy decomposition?
From the "China Paper Industry 2019 Annual Report", the author found the following data. We can use it as an entry point to explore some reasons.

Production and consumption of paper and cardboard from 2010 to 2019
It can be clearly seen that in recent years, the consumption and production of paper and cardboard have gradually become equal. Could it be that the papermaking industry can accurately estimate market demand, so it can perfectly "produce as much as it needs"?

Let’s look at the ratio of various consumption volumes of paper and cardboard to total consumption volume in 2019:

Among these types of paper and cardboard, one type of paper has a unique production and consumption volume and is in short supply. It is packaging paper.

Production and consumption of packaging paper from 2010 to 2019
The author would like to ask all model friends here: "What factors do you think have led to the rising demand for paper packaging?"

There must be one reason for this: paper packaging is more environmentally friendly.

So what makes "paper packaging more environmentally friendly" deeply ingrained in people's minds?

This has to mention “environmental protection organizations for environmental protection”.

Some environmental organizations will exaggerate some data when promoting environmental protection. For example, plastic bags take hundreds or thousands of years to degrade, or even cannot be degraded. "

But in fact, ordinary polyethylene plastic bags can be degraded by light. Through ultraviolet radiation, the polymer chains of polyethylene begin to become brittle and break, and eventually decompose into microscopic particles. However, because scientists do not know how long this process will take, they have given periods ranging from 10 to 1,000 years.
Thinking about it carefully, whenever we hear the word "environmental protection", it seems to be inherently correct and just. When we see the discoloration of the river water, the garbage in the ocean, and the hungry polar bears, we can feel the guilt of being a human being towards the earth and the harm we have done to other living things. We have a strong sense of guilt and rarely explore some data. true or false.

"Environmental protection" does not require reasons, it requires actions. So we rejected plastic bags that are not easily degradable, and instead favored paper bags that are easily degradable. This preference is so deep that we can't help but ignore the fact that it comes from a paper factory.

Some businesses have seen the business opportunities hidden behind "paper bags are more environmentally friendly", and they have contributed to this "environmental protection movement". "Paper" seems to be omnipotent. It can not only be made into handbags, but also cups, straws, clothes, decorations, etc., and then all are promoted as "environmental protection".

Putting aside the pollution caused by "paper" in the raw pulp molding, taking its advantage of high "recycling rate" as an example, our common "waste paper recycling" promotion process is as follows:
Everything looks very simple, green and pollution-free. But the fact is that recycling one ton of waste paper can only produce 800 kilograms of good paper. In the production process of recycled paper, in addition to the step of making original pulp, it also has to go through processes such as sorting, cleaning, and deinking, which causes a lot of various pollutions.
Moreover, people's requirements for paper bags have not been reduced because of environmental awareness. Beautiful, practical, and high-end, in order to cater to the needs of the market, manufacturers have exerted various skills on paper bags.
In order to prevent moisture and oxidation, some merchants will also require that the outside of the paper bag be coated with a layer of plastic film or wax. Paper bags are no longer purely environmentally friendly as advertised.

Although paper bags do have the advantage of being decomposed quickly, with the popularity of paper bags, their use and discard frequency have also accelerated significantly, and the final result will only run counter to environmental protection. However, among the more environmentally friendly materials that are currently available, paper bags are considered the best choice.

In the absence of a better choice, if you want to do your part to protect the environment, try to use less and reuse paper bags.

In recent years, the hygienic condition of dental unit waterline (DUWL) has gradually received attention in China. At the same time, many local standards have been introduced. For example, Beijing issued "DB11/T 1703- 2019 Technical Specifications for Waterway Disinfection of Oral Comprehensive Treatment Units" on December 25th, 2019, while Zhejiang Province issued "DB33/T 2307-2021 Technical Specifications for Cleaning and Disinfection of Dental Waterway Systems" on January 29, 2021. In fact, various countries in the world have begun to pay attention to issues related to waterway pollution in dental treatment units much earlier, and have made relevant specifications. This article summarizes the standards of various countries in this regard as follows: Foreign standards related to the waterway of dental treatment units In 1996, the American De...
